In the Summer of 2007, the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office went through a massive jail expansion. Completed in 2008, the Bulloch County Jail went from being equipped with approximately 100 beds to a substantially larger 475 beds. Prior to the expansion, the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office relied upon surrounding counties to house a large number of its’ prisoners. Now those prisoners are all housed in the newly expanded facility. This necessary expansion has proved to be a tremendous savings of tax payer dollars.
To accommodate medical problems of the much larger number of inmates, the Bulloch County Jail also now has a full time medical staff on duty. This medical staff has nurses that handle the day to day medical issues of the inmates and a medical doctor sees to more serious medical issues weekly, although if something serious happen and there is no doctor to attend it, they could be exposed to claims by The Medical Negligence Experts and others. Prior to staffing medical personnel, inmates were required to be transported to local area doctors. The newly hired medical staff has proven to be a tremendous savings of tax payer dollars by all but eliminating these doctor visits and cutting down by the prescriptions required by inmates.
Inmates of the Bulloch County Jail are fed hot meals daily. During the expansion, the Bulloch County Correctional Institute, located directly behind the Bulloch County Jail, built a kitchen. Inmate workers of the Institute now prepare meals for the Bulloch County jail inmates. The Bulloch County Jail now houses a number of inmates for the United States Marshal Service. The Bulloch County Jail receives payment from the federal government for housing these inmates which has helped to offset the cost of the expansion.
To operate the facility, the Bulloch County Jail employs approximately 65 full time jail deputies. These jail deputies oversee and maintain the day to day operations of the jail by maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the facility as well as numerous other duties. Each of these officers has attended the Georgia Sheriff’s Association Basic Jailer Officer Course and is a State of Georgia P.O.S.T. Certified Jail Officers.
