Deputy and civilian rescue two from Ogeechee River

On 8/14/13 at 1430 hrs patrol deputies were notified of the capsizing of a wide fishing kayak on the Ogeechee River involving two boaters.  The two boaters were hanging onto a log in the swift current and in danger of drowning.  Shortly after arriving on scene, Sgt Tracy Miller, Cpl Travis Tuenge, and STEP Deputy Randall Norman began yelling for the boaters and obtained a general idea of their location by the screams.  Sgt Miller then obtained the assistance of a resident of the area, Tommy Pope, in using Pope’s boat to search for the two boaters.  Sgt Miller and Mr Pope located the male and female boaters hanging onto the log in the current and were able to drag both into the boat.  Sgt Miller and Mr Pope then located a second boat which had been traveling with the rescued couple and towed that boat back to the landing near River Retreat Rd.  The four boaters, all from Guyton, were not injured in the incident.

Sheriff Anderson would like to thank Mr Pope for his willingness to assist deputies in rescuing the boaters.  He would also like to announce the awarding of the Lifesaving Medal to Sgt Miller for his efforts.  Sgt Miller is a 21 year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office and serves as a shift sergeant.  His conduct during his years of service has been exemplary, and this is simply another example of his dedication to serving the citizens of Bulloch County.
